The National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) recently awarded William Greaves Productions a startup grant for production of a documentary on the Harlem Renaissance.  The documentary will be offered to PBS by NBPC which will also make the film available to the public for download on its website. The project has been developed with grants from the Independent Television Service (ITVS), NBPC and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA).

The documentary draws together some of the most important African American artists of our time with rare, never-before-seen footage and interviews with Harlem Renaissance leaders filmed in 1971. It will look at the culture, folkways, and artistic creativity of African Americans since the 1920s and the crucial role that African American artists - and Harlem itself - have played in the evolution of a unique American culture. However, it will not simply be a nostalgic look at past accomplishments, but a frank evaluation by the artists themselves of what has been achieved, where they may have failed, and how they should respond to the challenges facing African American culture in the global economy of the 21st century. Will it survive as a vital creative force in the constantly changing rich tapestry of American culture?

William Greaves Productions is seeking completion funding for the project.

Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One and Take 2 1/2 released by The Criterion Collection in December 2006. This special edition double-disc set features a new documentary on Greaves's career, a video interview with actor/director Steve Buscemi. The set also includes a booklet featuring a new essay by critic Amy Taubin and production notes by Greaves for Take One.
